Shopping on Instagram is a brilliant and easy way to promote and sell products on social media. It allows customers to instantly see the price of items they like, and then seamlessly tap through to a brand’s website to purchase. To use Instagram Shopping, there a few things you need to do to get your account set up, approved and ready to go.

In this blog post, we’ll take you through each step.

You can choose to use Shopping to hero one product or feature multiple.

PREPARATION

Before you begin, you must:

  • Set up a Facebook Business Manager and make sure it is the owner of the Facebook Page linked to your Instagram account. You can find out how to set up Business Manager here.
  • Convert your Instagram account into a business profile and link it with your brand’s Facebook Page. You can find out how to do that here.
  • Check that your products adhere to Facebook’s merchant agreement and commerce policies.
  • Make sure you have the latest version of the Instagram app

STEP ONE: SETTING UP YOUR PRODUCT CATALOGUE

A catalogue/catalog is where Facebook stores all of the information about your products, including descriptions, prices, images and website links. There are three ways to set up a catalogue:

Option One: Add a Shop Section to your Facebook Page

This adds a ‘Shop’ tab to your Facebook Page which displays all of your products. You’ll need to manually set up and upload your items to this; find out how to do so here.

Option Two: Create a catalogue in Business Manager

This allows you to create a catalogue by manually inputting product data, uploading a data feed or connecting to a Facebook Pixel. Follow these instructions to set this up.

Option Three: Third Party Feeds

If you are already using an e-commerce service, you may be able to link it to your Facebook account. You can find instructions for this here: Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Magento, Google.

STEP TWO: ACCOUNT REVIEW

Once you’ve set up your catalogue, your Instagram account will need to be reviewed before you can gain access to the Instagram Shopping feature. This should automatically start once you’ve created your catalogue and can take a few days. Once your account has been approved, you’ll see this button appear at the top of your Instagram feed:

STEP THREE: LINK YOUR CATALOGUE TO INSTAGRAM

Before you can start creating posts, you’ll need to turn on product tags. This is easy: open your settings menu and tap ‘Shopping’ in the ‘Business settings’ section. Tap continue, and then select the catalogue you would like to use. Then tap Done.

STEP FOUR: CREATE A SHOPPING POST

You’re now fully set up to tag products in your posts and Stories. This is easy:

  • For posts, a ‘Tag Products’ option will have appeared under the ‘Tap People’ option in your share screen. Select this, tap on the product you’d like to tag, and then choose the item from your catalogue. You can tag five items per image, up to a maximum of 20 products in multi-image posts.
  • For Stories, simply add the product sticker option and choose an item from your catalogue. You can only add one product sticker to a story.

Before you can start creating posts, you’ll need to turn on product tags. This is easy: open your settings menu and tap ‘Shopping’ in the ‘Business settings’ section. Tap continue, and then select the catalogue you would like to use. Then tap Done.

Placement of product tags is important: make sure they don’t overlap, and where possible don’t cover the whole product.

And that’s it! We’d love to see your accounts in action, so do share your @handle in our Avocado Social Hub
